Ford At Valverde

One man’s attempt at dodging the war while on a treasure seeking mission for gold, leads him on a quest that he never imagined possible. As he crosses state borders from North to South, he is hell bent on determining his own path, until circumstances continue to fuel his situation beyond his control. With each tacking pace of the train, he will eventually venture into the bayous of Louisiana where he is beaten and left for dead, until he is discovered by someone that can alter the course of his destiny forever, but not before many battles are waged against him. Eventually, he is brought to a place where he must choose to live as a soldier of misfortune or discover the real reason why he began his journey in the first place.

From the timber mills of Wisconsin, into the deep South and the rugged West, nothing will keep Daniel Stone from going after what he wants, neither the cruelty of strangers or the vengeful warriors of the plains, while the Civil War looms around him. He would rather die trying to get where he wants to go, than to live with the regrets of a life unlived…

A diverse and intriguing novel, Ford at Valverde exemplifies the human experience during the American 1860's using adventure, self-discovery, and a beautiful writing style as its medium. The story offers a fresh perspective for a point in history that is seldom explored in this manner.

The Great Empty: A Novel is a delightful read for all ages. The author made the admirable choice of not simplifying language for young readers so that the story comes off with feel of the masters of children’s classics. Melillo’s writing employs a strong sense of humor but at no time is the plot sacrificed for that laugh out loud moment. Everything that happens within the course of the story-line could realistically happen in life and that very sense of realism is enchanting. Either Melillo has a talent for conveying action in the least amount of syllables possible or heavy editing went into this great work. The end result is a story that is fast-paced and leaves the reader with their hearts pounding.
